The CMSA Annual Business Summit 2024

The Capital Market Solicitors Association successfully held its Annual Business Summit on Thursday 6th of June 2024 at the Oriental Hotel Victoria Island Lagos with the theme “Revolutionizing the Nigerian Capital Market through Innovative Financial Instruments for Sustainable Development,”

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Capital Market Solicitors Association Chairman,
Mr. Vincent Iweze, noted that in light of recent developments in the industry, it was imperative for capital market participants to collaborate to find and develop novel ideas and solutions that will advance the capital market.

Delivering his keynote address the Director General of the Security and Exchange Commission
Dr. Emomotimi Agama, emphasized that the days of financial advisers, undertaking capital market transactions without the participation of capital market solicitors were long gone.
He therefore encouraged capital market solicitors leverage on that to cement their place in the capital market. He urged capital market practitioners to complement each other because, in the rapidly evolving financial sector, sustainable development could not be accomplished if stakeholders were unable to cooperate particularly as the Federal Government was working hard to change, improve, and promote the country’s business environment. In his words, “Global best practices in the capital market will always be upheld, and evolving new trends aimed at revolutionizing the capital market are always welcome.”

Mallam Attahiru Maccido, a panelist at the event and the Managing Director of One17 Capital expressed the view that lawyers were crucial in all kinds of business contracts, especially those involving non interest financial transactions where religious principles must be preserved and upheld. Accordingly, he insisted that all byproducts of non-interest banking and financial transactions either stem from or are legally binding contracts.

In the same vein,  Mrs. Elizabeth Ekpo, another panelist and a Senior Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers Nigeria, advocated for striking a balance between law, policy and the pursuit of profit in order to avoid uncharted territory. She also sued for fair conditions so that investors with a variety of economic interests, lawyers, stockbrokers, and other capital market participants may interact and exchange ideas.

Other notable guests in attendance were Senator Osita Izunaso, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market; the chairman of the CMSA board of trustees Chief Anthony Idigbe, SAN , trustees of the board of the CMSA and past Chairpersons of the CMSA.
